How does Napoleon use his power to control the animals?

Napoleon used propaganda, intimidation and lies to rule the animals.

He used propaganda by popularize the phrases of "I will work harder" and the most important, "Napoleon is always right", in which case was used to remove any argument against how Napoleon was using his powers. "Clover warned him sometimes to be careful not to overstrain himself, but Boxer would never listen to her. His two slogans, ´I will work harder` and ´Napoleon is always right`, seemed to him a sufficient answer to all problems." (page 46-46).

Napoleon also used intimidation by making a bunch of protector dogs be their guardians. These dogs bark, threatening the animals, if they were to object against Napoleon."The animals were not certain what the word meant, but (...) the three dogs who happened to be with him growled so threateningly, that they accepted his explanation without further questions." (page 43). In a democracy, the animals would have had the right to judge if it was good or bad for the community, but it is a dictatorship, because it is using the dogs (militaries), to command with absolute power.

Finally, he uses lies to achieve his purposes. Squealer lied about the pigs, needing everybody`s milk and apples, because it was necessary to "preserve their health". Napoleon lied about that pigs could sleep in beds, with no sheets, taking advantage of the animals lack of reading and bad memory. "You did not suppose, surely,  that there was ever a ruling against beds? (...) The rule was against sheets, which are a human invention" (page 50) This is a lie, because bed are also a human invention and because the rule was against beds the whole time.

Sheep Ends Dead After "The Battle Of The Cowshed"

Yesterday, a big confrontation between the revolutionary animals and the human farmers, took place in Animal Farm. It seems like weeks ago the animals had taken over control of the Mr. Jones farm, to make them their own. Mr. Jones and half a dozen other from Foxwood and Pinchfield, tried to take back the farm, bringing plenty of sticks and a gun. Fortunately, the great defensive tactics of one of their leaders Snowball,   lead the humans to retreat. Sadly a sheep was shot in action, by the one and only Mr. Jones. We will remember this sheep, with the condecoration of Animal Hero, Second Class.

We had interviewed two eye witnesses from the fight itself. The cat. "Cat, tell us what happened in that battle// Mr. Jones and six more farmers came armed with sticks and a gun. Our commander Snowball had as prepared long ago, with a planned ambush. We would put in position and while they were confident, thinking we were retreating, we would attack suprisle. I was the hero in there. I jumped onto a farmers neck and incruste my nails. After that, the farmers surrender, but not without leaving one of our friends dead. The sheep. I feel sorry for him."

The other eye witness we managed to interview was a Snowball. "Snowball, tell us how you made the defense successful// Well, we had this prepared. I had studied a book of Julius Caesar´s campaing. First, I distracted them with 35 pigeons dungs, while the geese pecked at their legs. Then I launched my second line of attack: Muriel (the mare), Benjamin (the donkey) and all the sheep went to atack. After that, I screamed the sing of retreat,  just for them to get confident and then attack the surprisely, where I myself dashed Mr. Jones."

We also interviewed a general from the national army, an expert of hand to hand combat: General Cruise. "Do you think the animal defense tactics was good?// Yes, I think reading the Julius Caesar´s campaing, helped him a lot. They were prepared, they used distraction to attack suprisely. It was a very good defense."

Bibliography

Animal Farm, an introduction

My favourite animal character from chapter 1 is the dog. His relation to the other animals, is that the dog is the protector of the farm and takes care of all animals. He is men´s best friend, but in the end humans drowned them in the ponds; that is why he is loyal to the animals, instead of the humans. He reacted happily about the Major´s speech.

The dog is my favourite character, because he is very intelligent, the warden of the farm, the man´s best friend and is happy most of the time. I liked the way he reacted about the rats, because these are wild animals that could attack the farm´s animals, and the dog reacted agressively to protect. Also, they are funny, because in the voting for the stay of the rats, he voted twice. Aditionally, he remembered the song Beasts of England fastly and sung whining.

  1. Some good observations about the dog, and nice synthesis with what dogs symbolise more generally: I like your "man's best friend" reminder.

Keep up this kind of thoughtful work.

  2. As you are aware, your rhetorical devices definitions are not the work that was set. I note you have chosen not to try again.

In addition, your next entry, "Animal Farm in 2013" is late. Please make sure you do your best with this entry or you will be losing precious marks for your grade.

  4. Nice work. Your title, while it appears neutral and objective, clearly shows the author's sympathies for the animals by excluding the mention of the human death. Your choices of interview subject and expert testimony also make the readers side with the animals and against the humans. Effective use of propaganda and bias techniques. You didn't include a captioned image, which is a shame as it would add to the authentic feel of the report. On the whole, this is nice work.

Language notes: If you are not sure whether a word exists in English, use a dictionary to check before using it; 'incruste' for example, is not a word. Also, check punctuation and formatting carefully. Your layout for the interviews is not consistent with English language newspaper format.

  5. Excellent writing for this week's analysis of Napoleon. You make superb use of short quotes to emphasize your points and give a clear explanation of each of your ideas. Very well done.

Try to ensure that you always follow a quote with an explanation of its purpose in your writing. You end your first paragraph with a quote which you don't further explain. This leaves your reader unsure about exactly what you are trying to say.

However, the rest of your work is well explained. Keep up the good work.
